Somali is preparing for its next election cycle that according to schedule supposed to start on December 1, 2020.
- 1 – 10 December 2020: the election of Members of the Upper House
- 10 – 27 December 2020: the election of Members of the House of the People
- 1 January – 8 February 2021: the election of the Speakers and the President.
Although the current selection electoral process in Somalia does not meet the basic requirements of an election, it is often referred as an election and the words election and selection are used interchangeably.
The electoral process is facing significant delay due to the absence of two out of the five Federal Member States (Jubaland and Puntland) and due to the fierce critique from the Council of the Presidential Candidates’ Union who blamed the President of appointing his supporters and security staff as members of the election commission and are contemplating of initiating a parallel process if the President refuses to appoint members who are neutral.
